Now that we've clarified what we mean by circularity, I'd like to zoom in on a few of the many technologies that make it possible to recycle and reuse EV batteries once they've reached the end of their first life.
It all starts with understanding the condition of the battery itself.
Before we can think about repurposing it, we need to know its health status essentially, how much life it still has left.
That's where our specialized diagnostic devices come in.
These tools allow engineers to access key information from the battery without even opening it, helping determine whether it can be reused in the second life application like energy storage.
Earlier, we touched on safety precautions and the presence of hazardous materials.
To handle these batteries safely, technologies have been developed for the mechanical disassembly of their components.
For example, there are robotic systems with specially designed grippers that can remove battery covers.
These automated grippers allow robots to dismantle battery housings precisely and safely, reducing human exposure to danger while making the process more efficient.
What about EV batteries from vehicles that have been in accidents?
Inventors have been given some thought to this and have patented technologies precisely for such circumstances.
As you might expect, this is a high risk situation.
Damaged batteries can even catch fire spontaneously.
One particular patent describes a process that submerges the battery or even the entire vehicle.
into water and then treats it at very high temperatures, around two hundred degrees Celsius.
According to this patent, the combination of heat, moisture, and chemical reactions should help stabilize the battery, limit further temperature rise, and safely break down its components while preventing the release of toxic gases.
These are just a few examples of technologies enabling the reuse of EV batteries.
But it's important to understand that battery circularity is a chain of critical steps.
It begins with collection and transport, followed by a diagnosis.
Can a battery be reused or should it be recycled?
