And that depends on many factors chemical composition, condition, capacity, or damages.

Would it not be easier if we didn't have to guess what's inside a battery?

Policymakers in general agree.

Starting in February 2027, the EU battery regulation will require a digital passport for EV and certain other types of batteries.

The passport will include useful information about the battery, which will allow for safer and more informed handling, disassembly and sorting, making it easier to give batteries the much needed second life and leading to more efficient recycling.

Each step of the chain must work technically, logistically and economically.

Innovation is key here to make processes safer, more energy efficient and more cost effective.

Now that we've covered what's in EV batteries and how they can get a second life, I'm curious to see where the technologies are heading and who is working on that.

Here, our patent databases are a brilliant source of information.

They show that patenting related to battery circularity started to surge in 2017, the same year that global sales of electric cars broke the 1 million barrier for the first time.

Since then, the so called international patent families have grown at a compound annual rate of forty two percent for battery circularity, compared with two percent across all technology fields.

Data also shows that Asia, in particular China, has the lead in both battery production and battery recycling.

Partly because the region already has access to large volumes of batteries that were scrapped and discarded during production.

While Asia may be in the lead, Europe remains a force to be reckoned with.
