Between 2000 and 2023, every fifth invention in battery circularity came from an EU-based inventor.
European inventors are particularly active in technologies around collection, handling, chemical transformation and extraction.
In other words, breaking batteries down and recovering those materials we mentioned earlier lithium, nickel, and cobalt.
I went back to Teo to ask what role inventors from different regions play.
When you look a bit closer, each of these companies is building up very distinct patent portfolios, some covering the entire recycling chain from collection to material recovery, others focusing on specific steps like chemical transformation or battery pretreatment.
That's very impressive indeed, and tells us a lot about the pace of innovation in this sector.

An electric vehicle battery is not just a component inside a car.
It's part of a much larger material system, and its value continues beyond its first life.
A circular system can be designed, built, and scaled.
It needs inventors, engineers, researchers, companies, policymakers, investors, and patent systems all pulling in the same direction.
