We know that that is a great scaffold for the child and so we do need to just keep at it.

Yeah, so I think we certainly have a whole generation, maybe even two generations now,

within New Zealand where we might be quite proficient at reading, but spelling on the whole and writing is not so great.

And that is because we haven't had the opportunity to, while we have memorized perhaps whole words,

we have never really identified the word patterns within those words.

And so it's not really something that we've mastered.

And so therefore, spelling becomes difficult.

So it's the same with children now.

They might be proficient readers, but unless the alphabetic code has been learnt, then...

the spelling might become difficult later on.

So, yeah.

Well, that's the dream.

And that's what we're working towards, certainly.

Absolutely.

Look, I had, a couple of years ago, I had a boy who was in year six.

So, you know, he's, what, 10 years?

almost 11 at this stage.

And he was flagged for intervention.

He arrived at our school.

And when I assessed him, he knew the word I and his name.
