that we're hoping that children come to school with some proficiency with oral language, you know, experience with talking with their parents, but not just having parents talk

at the children but having those conversation skills that a lot of our children unfortunately are coming to school that it's just not well developed.

So oral language needs to be well developed.

Teachers are really good at

you know, teaching those sounds to children.

And so generally speaking, while the student might not come to school knowing some of those sounds or even the letters of the alphabet, within six months, we would expect to see that children have got a grasp of that.

And so the teacher is really embedding that within the classroom.

It's happening on a daily basis and sometimes several times a day.

And yeah,

After six months, if we're not seeing progress or that knowledge being developed, that's really the first time when we start to raise some red flags and think, well, maybe we need to put some interventions in place.

Some extra support.

Yeah, absolutely.

Yeah, so one day I was in the playground and on duty, as many teachers are, and I had a young lady come up to me.

She was in year five and she was one of our ESOL students who had just arrived at the school.

So English, not her first language.

Exactly.

English language learner, I think.

Absolutely.

And while her English was actually very proficient, she came up to me and she says, are you Mrs Brown?

And I said, yes, I am.
