She says, are you that reading teacher everyone's talking about?

And she just shared with me, look, I've been at your school for three days and I've got a big problem.

She says, I can speak English really well, but I can't read a single word.

And so my problem is when the teacher gives me work to do, I can't read any of the work.

I can't read what's on the board.

I can't.

Wow, how old was she at the time?

So she would have been about nine.

Right, wow.

And just couldn't access the learning that was happening in the classroom.

So she said to me, would you teach me how to read?

And I said, absolutely.

And she said, look, I'm really clever, you know.

I can actually read five different languages.

So it wasn't so she couldn't read.

It's just she didn't know the code for English.

That's right.

So she came to my intervention room for 15 minutes a day, and I taught her the first eight sounds that we would teach students.

And then there came this moment where I said to her, right, you know these eight sounds now,

I'd like you to try and slide some of those sounds together.
