And we also need to be having an intelligent conversation about how much US foreign policy, including our war on drugs and our economic policies towards Latin America for decades, has contributed to that mass amount of desperation.
They have made it so that there aren't enough stations.
There aren't enough places where people can enter legally.
There aren't enough places where there are judges and ways to adjudicate.
This was something that Biden was working on when he was president.
And it was Donald Trump who came in and told the GOP senators, even though it was a bipartisan bill, not to vote for it.
And he did that because he knew it would be popular, the American people would appreciate it, and that would give Biden a win.
So obviously, the answer is not either just open borders or closed borders.
It is that intelligent middle.
The asylum system is a humanitarian core of a principled America.
We just have to vet people.
We have to have enough judges.
We have to do this legally.
So I didn't hear Oliver say that.
And I don't think the American people want either extreme, either open borders where people aren't even vetted, and they also don't want a shutting down of America's heart.
Not entirely, no.
I think what's the problem is the tenor of this conversation.
I think it's kind of tragic.
Because everything that we have talked about here is extremely important.
It's important for us, for our country, for our children, and for generations to come.
