Um and so we did some focus groups and we met with some patients and we said
Hey, you know, we've been doing this thing in cancer.
We know heart failure is really different.

No, how would we apply this information for?
A heart failure group.
And so we did two pilot studies.
Um, the first one was done at Dartmouth, and at that point.
Mm um is when I was recruited, we were recruited down to uh UAB.
So when we got the pilot study funding from the National Palliative Care Research Center.
Um we did the pilot both at um Dartmouth and down in Alabama.
And uh we learned a lot from that pilot study.
It was about approximately 30 patients and caregivers in each um at each site.
And uh we learned that you cannot do the same thing in the north that you need to do in the south.
Um a lot of things that are different in the north and the south, come to think of it.
I that I G I hadn't noticed before, but until you pointed it out.
Um, but for sure in the in the heart failure study, um there was much more um involvement with spirituality and religion in people's um and I don't want to say that up north is a bunch of um atheists or agnostics, but in our religion and spirituality measures much higher.
Um and then um in empowerment, we had an empowerment or a patient activation measure.
Um typically much more uh activated up north versus down south.
And then there were um literacy issues that we haven't picked up as much of.
