Well, I think the first thing to say, Claire, is that we're coming into a deeply worrying situation this winter and indeed spring for many people and particularly for for low and middle income families.
Um I think there's a huge sense that they're falling behind when you particularly when you look, we've had months now of
Elevated oil and gas prices that is going to feed into food prices over the coming months.
And already inflation is outpacing people's wage increases.
So, you know, it's very clear to us that we need a comprehensive package, uh, that the country and families out there need a comprehensive package in this upcoming budget.

The problem, really with
The problem really with
Well well, you know, the the the the big thing for us, Claire, is that uh about fourteen years ago there was a very clear proposal put forward um uh uh about a second tier child benefit payment, right?
So targeting
families who uh only get the standard child benefit payment and and don't get those targeted additional measures available to those families let's say on social welfare.
And and and our key priority as a Labour Party is targeting those low income families and making sure that they actually get additional support.
But this pro this proposal doesn't do that.
But it doesn't but no but no but Claire but the important thing is right, you know, the government have talked
Years about this second tier child benefit payment.
It's clear we need to change a government for that because you need social welfare and revenue commissioners to talk to each other, to act to their systems to talk to each other to actually deliver on that uh that that that piece of work.
And in the absence of that, right, then we need to do something this winter.
So we're very clear that we need to try and afford supports to families who otherwise won't be able to.
