Okay, we it's clear we need a change of government, right, to ensure that we have a proper system of targeting low-income families.
But in the absence of government showing any interest in putting that in place, we need something for this winter.
And that is why we are proposing this voucher for every child.
The reality is that we have about 670,000 uh families.
A very small number get additional family supports through the social welfare system.
There is a lot of low and middle income families out there who need support, who otherwise won't get it.
It's ten years since child benefit was increased.
We as a Labour Party take it very seriously.
Prudent management of the public finances, and rather than saying we permanently increase the child benefit payment, what we're saying is put a temporary support in place for this winter, while we know that families right across this country will be facing a steep increase in food prices.

So Claire, uh what makes absolute sense to me is that like, you know, the key thing here is that we need a big change in how we support low income families in this country.
We need a second tier child benefit system.
That proposal has been around for years and government have sat in their hands and done nothing about it.
As I said, the Labour Party is not in government.
If we were in government, we would be putting the changes in place to ensure that you would have that targeted support to low-income families.
But, right, I'm a realist.
