but i do think we need to see some sort of a temporary ban for the next six weeks so let's face it you know if there's any time of the year tempo is about it would be now when there's more people on holidays or or less people commuting to work and we see that on our roads um to ensure that we get a number of crucial things uh you know put let them get their act together so in terms of guarded training with regards to pursuit we we know from talking to the guard here in the ground in dublin central
But right across the country that, you know, Gardaí don't believe that they cannot pursue, particularly children under the age of 18, because of the potential consequences if there is a serious incident, if they lose their life or, of course, if there is a brain injury.
So we need that special pursuit training.
Number two, with regards to registration, like I think
e-scooters, they're not a form of bike.
They are, you know, like a push bike.
They are a motorised vehicle and they need to be registered.
And then I think, you know, if we do that, then you can allow drone detection technology and other sort of initiatives to actually detect who is legal and illegal on the road.
I suppose number three then, going after the retailers.
And this is, I suppose, a really big bugbear of mine because we know there are laws there.
They've been there for some time now as to,
what can and cannot be sold.
And yet we know there are retailers selling to children under the age of 16, advertising to children under the age of 16, but more crucially, selling above the 20 kilometre per hour speed limit.
And I think there are very serious questions to be asked of the government in terms of how we ban the importation
of these souped up e-scooters.
And secondly, then how we come down very heavily on the retailers.
Now, retailers would say, look, they can, you know, I suppose, block the or reduce the speed to 20 kilometres an hour.
But we understand that when somebody purchases, they can actually just reverse those settings then.
And look, at the end of the day, there is no silver bullet to this.
There is no one fix, but it's through a series of measures that we can get to a place that those who want to use e-scooters safely and legitimately can proceed to do so.
