But we end up removing the situation where e-scooters are effectively used as toys, which we see with children as young as nine flying around in scooters.
And secondly, then, is, you know, a force of intimidation, particularly in the communities that I represent in Dublin Central.
Well, I think, you know, there have been suggestions for a while now about a special Garda unit that would look at the policing of e-scooters and scrambler bikes.
And I certainly would personally be very supportive of that.
well well well look i think you you've raised a very important point like we have seen a number of alarming cases over the past number of of of months and indeed a number of years now where guards have been pursued um on foot of their you know very legitimate activities in the course of policing our communities uh particularly if there's an accident and and and and i i very much regret that because i think while guards obviously have to be held accountable and that is crucially important they also have to know
that they are empowered by our state to enforce the laws of our country.
Well, I don't know what full indemnity means, if I be clear with you, Ciara.
I suppose what I support is that the guards are supported and empowered and trained to go away and try and ensure that there is effective policing for East Scooters.
And what does that mean?
That means that if there is somebody, right, I'm thinking one street in my constituency now where there's fellas, you know, as young as 10 or 11, flying up and down in East Scooters, actively intimidating people, people afraid to walk on the footpaths,
that Gardaí would be able to interact and intercept those young people and ensure that those scooters are taken off.
And look, can I be very clear about the guards?
The guards in my area in Dublin Central have done a fantastic job with regards to the confiscation of e-scooters and scrambler bikes in people's homes, particularly when they know that those vehicles have been used for illegal activity, particularly drug dealing.
but the reality is that when they're flying up and down the road there is a huge difficulty in policing that and so we do need to make sure that like as in once guards are specially trained and we know this with regards to you know guards driving cars at high speed they need special training for that but i think society supports that they are trained and that they can do that and we want the same to happen with regards to e-scooters like at the end of the day
As I say, there is no silver bullet here.
It's a series of initiatives by government and it is going after the retailers as well.
But I think the thing is, together, if there is a targeted, radical and urgent response by government, we can begin to see, you know, that reduction.
And what is a public health crisis amongst children at the moment?
Well, it's radical in that we haven't seen, we've seen lots of talk and no action for a prolonged period of time.
Like we were raising the e-scooter, you know, crisis in January.
