Why is this so resonant?
Not just for his fellow Muslim Americans, not just first of all Arab Americans in Michigan, but for a broader piece of the electorate.
And if he wins, as the poll suggests, easily over a very establishment-backed candidate, Naley Stevens, previously pro-Israel, but now saying every time she gets the microphone, well, I was attacked by Bibi.
Can you imagine 15 years ago, a Democrat running to try to win a nomination, bragging about being attacked by the prime minister of Israel?
This demonstrates that El-Sayed is obviously onto something, even if he doesn't win the primary, which he probably will, he's onto something.
And that something is that hostility to Israel, hostility to AIPAC, and a linkage between previous and current American support for Israel
with well-funded support for an organization, not exclusively supported by Jewish money, but largely supported by Jewish money, is something that is not just seen as out of favor, but something seen by the American left as fundamentally connected to conspiracies that are true to corruption.
And I will say, and I know you've been a great analyst of differentiating between the problems for Israel within the Democrat and Republican Party.
This one is not different.
This one goes up to the vice president of the United States and many others on the MAGA side of the Republican Party who feel the same things and say the same things, often not backed by a fact.
He's not a practicing doctor, but he has a medical degree.
He ran for governor of Michigan a few years ago and did okay.
If he said, you can't talk about Israel and AIPAC this election, he would still have a platform that's very popular with the progressive wing of the party, talking about public health and about Medicare for all, backed by Bernie Sanders, backed by AOC.
Ron Fournier, who is from Michigan, longtime reporter for the Associated Press, who covered Bill Clinton as an Associated Press reporter in Arkansas, said on Twitter this weekend that the person whose political skills Dr. Al-Said has most to remind him of is Bill Clinton.
That's a pretty high praise from a guy who knows to say this guy has political skills on par with Bill Clinton.
He's very talented, although I will say my gut is that at some point, if he continues this in the general election, that constantly referring to AIPAC in Israel may not resonate as much.
He doesn't do it in his ads.
The central thing, and again, the AIPAC in Israel money is a piece of this, is saying special interests.
Special interests control government policy, and that's why government policies help the wealthiest, the money over what he says, the many.
