Now the timing of it wasn't certain because his contract went with Red Bull went to the end of fifteen, but there was a release clause if he wasn't in a certain position um by a certain stage of the season and the first uh the or rather the last uh moment that he could trigger it by informing them.

So he's trying to get himself placed so that he he he's thinking maybe I don't want to go to the end of my contract, maybe I I want an agreement to cut that short because it depends when the window may open at Mercedes or possibly McLaren, but I think he was looking at Mercedes at that point.

Um and so he felt he had this power of

you know, in in in the the he had the the best hand in the in the negotiations.

And Montezemlo had instructed Mattiacchi um to just string him along for as long as possible because what might have happened was that Seb didn't trigger the release clause or wasn't in a position to to trigger the release clause, in which case they would have needed Alonso to stay and so they didn't

didn't want to say, Yeah, okay, we'll agree to release you early, which actually would have been very convenient, of course, because it could have got sib straight in.

Um so that they didn't i it was all in a state of flux and Ferrari knew what was going on and Alonso didn't.

So that that was an unfair negotiation really.

So Fernando's thinking he's got all the information and he didn't have.

Um and that was very much part of uh that that whole

Mulou of um, you know, why Ferrari and Alonso had sort of broken down really.

They were no longer a unit.

Um in fact uh somebody who worked there said to me, he said in in his first year in twenty ten he was absolutely part of the team and it felt fantastic and felt like really building something.

And when we when we lost in that title finale with the wrong strategy call, um he said that's when it broke.

It broke

Broke almost from that moment.

From up from that moment everything that was wrong was a team's fault and everything went right was Fernando's uh merit.
