He's a dandy, a rich kid.

Yeah.

So I'm I honestly I could listen to Willem Dafoe reading the phone book, but um he's great in the lead.

He's as this kind of legend who never was and suddenly is.

But he has this very low-key performance, which is brilliantly counterpointed in the other main lead by Greta Lee, who plays Gloria.

I know you're a big fan of Greta Lee, which you both think she's terrific.

So she is Gloria, who is this mysterious vamp who believes that there is no greater calling in life than to be an ingenue.

But who's got this kind of very high-camp exterior which marks internal chaos?

And Ed is initially mesmerized by Gloria, particularly after seeing her do this cabaret act.

She does this cabaret song, which is kind of like this Lily von Stupps-style uh cabaret number that she performs to this bar of men, all of whom are like just completely mesmerized by her presence.

But like his life, her.

Her life is kind of an act.

She's sort of hiding behind this uh exterior.

And the fact that these two performances balance themselves out so well, one very big, one very small, is really the heart of the film's kind of melancholy appeal.

I mean, it's a it's about missed opportunities, it's about the search for fame or infamy, and about the illusion of finding it.

It's a a lot of it is about the nature of authenticity because this.

Kind of hipster poet, you know, rich kid, dandy uh artists, are they every single word that they spout is just to me like cheese grater on the ear.

But you know that you've heard.

Yeah, I'm not sure.

Incredibly annoying.
