In the final draft here or in the final copy, she's a traveler like Daniel who's moving across the country.

In the original script, she was actually a local who'd been eyeing off Daniel for some time since he'd moved into town.

I did have a lot of the lore developed before I ever actually wrote a single paragraph on this.

That was one of the first things I did was just write down copious notes.

On the background, who the shadows were, where they come from, their life cycle, all those sorts of things, so that I could write with authority from the very start.

But one thing that occurred to me was that the shadows' feeding habits, it would make more sense for them to pick off travelers as they were moving through rather than preying on locals because the locals would attract more attention with disappearances in the town.

Travelers, it's especially back in the 1980s, it would have been more.

more difficult to figure out which town the traveler had gone missing in.

You know, they were last seen in this town.

Did they make it to the next town?

That kind of thing.

So I decided that I would go back and rewrite Helen's story a little bit so that she was also a traveler, so that it made more sense for the shadow to pick her off in this opening scene.

I'm sure it still would have worked the other way, 'cause I'm sure that from time to time shadows, if they get especially hungry, if there's no travellers coming through, they may be forced to pick off a local.

It could be done.

But I just thought this would be more realistic having them pick off a traveller than a local.

Yeah, the reason is theatrics.

Yeah, it literally just painted a cool picture in my mind to have them go out in sequence, one by one, falling like dominoes and kind of leading the listeners and Daniel's attention further down to the end of the alleyway.

And this is a very deliberate act by the shadow.

We know that they can control sources of light, various electrical light and also candles.
