And when they arrive, our main character Fitz says, one of them made the V for victory sign.
And of course, we know as a reader that it's the peace sign, but he as a protagonist doesn't know what it means.
Yeah, so let's talk about those two characters who sort of lead us into the story.
As I say, it's about Timothy Leary, who of course is a real historical figure, but our main protagonists are Fitz and Joanie Loney, who are a sort of conventional husband and wife.
He's working on his thesis at Harvard and hasn't really thought of a thesis topic yet.
She's a librarian.
They have a son called Corey, who's a sort of early teenager, and
And before the involvement with Timothy Leary, you would think they were, as you say, suburban, regular people, drink a lot of brandy at parties, have a martini, but wear suits.
You know, they're not part of the counterculture.
They are.
And part of their initial reason for getting involved is that Fitz sees getting in the good books of Timothy Leary, who's a rising star academic at Harvard.
And so he wants to get in the good books by going to one of the sessions he's heard so much about.
Little does he know, of course, we as a reader know that these sessions involve taking LSD.
It really does.
And I think the book in its own way, oddly for a book about LSD and about the beginnings of the counterculture, actually is quite conservative and almost judgmental of the characters, and sometimes with good reason.
So, as you say, as they continue on their path into LSD experimentation...
and they take it more and more.
And there's a lot of references to the specific dose they're taking, and it goes up and up and up and up through the novel, how much they need to take to get to the place they were at.
