And there's also not only the impact on their marriage, but one of the more difficult parts of the novel is the impact on their son, Corey, who at a very young age is introduced to LSD because they

seem to truly believe in the meaning of the experiment and think it would be, they call it the sacrament.

And they think it would almost be unfair not to allow Corey to take the sacrament.

But the family breakdown as a result of their LSD addiction is palpable.

And it really does sort of suggest this message of, well, if you get this far involved into these kinds of drugs, it is going to have a negative impact.

I think so.

I think she... Well, I think she is able throughout the story to see the negative consequences.

Fitz, as a main character, he's a very unappealing person.

He's quite dull and he's selfish and he sees LSD, has these highfalutin ideas about the experimentation, but ultimately...

He just, he kind of likes to get high and he likes to use the collective to, you know, engage in extramarital affairs.

There's a lot of sex.

There's a lot of sex and things like that.

Whereas Joanie, as you say, is in some ways more interesting figure because her life, because of the standards of the time, he gets, they're both quite bright, but he gets to be an academic at Harvard.

She's just an assistant at the local library trying to support their family.

And she does initially at least see LSD as,

more as an escape, more as something interesting.

But I think Boyle can't quite decide whether he's commenting on the sexism of the time or just engaging in the sexism of the time.

I mean, so many of the female characters are described with their breasts first.

We have this consciousness throughout the book of all the women, how attractive they are and a hierarchy of who's the most attractive and who's the least attractive.
