Not just any old PhD in English, you are a Dylanologist, Bob Dylan,
Technically, what was your PhD on?
What was the title?
But of course, we know that Bob Dylan was made Nobel Laureate for Literature in, I think, 2016.
Didn't you tell me, Kate, that people say, you know, it's spring in Japan when Murakami hasn't won the Nobel Prize again?
No.
And I hope that's true.
OK, well, this is the set-up.
We have a central character who has no name, but he has just...
been separated from his wife and goes on a very long drive, but ends up living in the house that belongs to a friend of his from uni.
At uni, he studied painting and so did his friend.
They both kind of moved on once the real world intervened, although our main guy remained a portrait painter.
He'd been an abstractionist at university.
But the house that he's lent by his friend is
was the place where the friend's father worked, Tomohiko Amada, who is a painter of renown that we hear about.
Tomohiko Amada lived in the early part of the 20th century in Europe, in fact, in Vienna, and this is where he was deeply immersed in the Western tradition of painting, but had some kind of conversion, returned to Japan, to Tokyo, and began painting in this style that dates back to, well, the 1400s.
And so here are the questions about sanity that are weaved throughout the whole story.
