Emmets were certainly correct when he said it was a long way to the bottom.
I had been descending for quite some time through absolute darkness, and still the end remained out of sight.
It was difficult to imagine that Emmets and his son, though both quite sturdy in their own rights, had managed this descent by means of a single hanging rope.
At long last, I was treated to a view of the bottom of the cavern, which is quite fortuitous as I was soon to run out of rope.
As far as I could see, the cavern seemed unremarkable.
A large run-of-the-mill limestone vacancy opened wide within the deep earth.

A giant hallway lined with what looked like massive jail cells.
The whole thing carved entirely from the stone of the cavern.
There was also no mistaking the rooms for anything other than prison cells.
And they were colossal.
They ranged from about thirty to one hundred feet tall, and anywhere from seventy to two hundred feet wide.
