Then I got the opportunity.

I directed a play with two friends in a pub, a two-handed version of Alan Sillitoe's The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner, and it was really good.

and a really simple set and setting.

And so we managed to flog it around a few.

We toured it around England.

And how old were you at this time?

Mid-twenties, I suppose.

And then the British Council saw it and they said, oh, this would be great for us.

So we went to Nigeria and toured around Nigeria, going to universities and theatre troupes.

And that was amazing because the next day we'd do workshops with them.

And they loved the play, because it was very rhythmic, because you couldn't really run around on stage.

And so they'd want to work with that the next day, and it was absolutely fantastic.

And I saw what theatre meant for them as a sort of political, social discussion forum, that a lot of their theatre groups are very political, and it's a way of airing things, you know.

And I thought, wow, I see the value of this.

And I started to see what it offered me and what I offered it.

And then I sort of reconciled and, yeah.

But that's the kind of thing that your father would have thought through as well.

Possibly, yeah, maybe.

Because I just bimbled.
