Now I would never have started negotiating.

with anyone because it wasn't just me.

There was one or two others, but you'd often start on your own, but you have to have the scene contained.

Because I often said to my colleagues that I'd be there.

And near the end then, the first year or two years, it was more, you were there on your own or whatever, but then the ASU got involved because they were coming on stream then.

Yeah.

So have the scene contained.

Armed support unit, yeah.

So what you'd have is, right, if this person comes out the door and makes a run, whoever's here can deal with it.

They can step in, yeah.

So you always had to have this, you always had a safe place to negotiate at.

You're looking for safety for yourself, safety for everybody else.

And then the ultimate plan is when I start, this can finish very quick or this can go on for hours.

But when you start...

you want to be ready that the person is going to come from where they are.

And do we have the resources to deal with that?

Because I did have a funny one once where I wasn't going to see him when a fella, he was in a block of flats and he was between the front door and the back door.

So I was going in around to him.

I thought we had a lot of guards, but I got him to the front door and he opened it and I went, right, he's here.
