And in the long term, they may have chronic pain.

They may also have tinnitus or tinnitus, depending on how you want to say it, ringing in the ears and balance problems because of damage to the eighth cranial nerve.

They may have some cardiac arrhythmias.

Also, because lightning is an injury to the nervous system, they'll not only have the brain injury, but they'll have chronic pain because of damage to some of the nerves.

And the third part of the nervous system is the sympathetic nervous system.

So sympathetic nervous system controls your digestion, your blood pressure, your temperature control, things like that.

So some people will complain that they never feel cold or they never feel hot.

And that's because of the autonomic nervous system.

Because the vast majority of lightning injuries and lightning strikes to people are not direct strikes.

Only three to five percent of the deaths are from a direct strike.

The vast majority are from other mechanisms, including it hits a tree that you're standing under and part of it flashes across to you.

Or it hits the distance away and you're on the baseball field and it travels through the ground and gets to you.

Another way is that anytime there is an electric field, it induces an opposite charge in anything close to it.

So if you've got this charged thundercloud coming across the field that you're standing on, opposite charges are going to be induced in the telephone tower, the person standing there, a blade of grass, a cow.

And so you get what's called upward leaders or upward streamers.

Even if those don't connect with the lightning that's coming down, it's still a large amount of energy and can cause injury or death.

So you're talking about 95% of lightning injuries being indirect.
