Heifel has double the points of anybody else at the end of it.
And right from the start of the season, that's obviously where it's going.
So he comes in so hotly tipped.
We were talking about Goodwood for some reason before the recording.
And he's added to his reputation by then because he's been a McLaren test driver for a while.
And he's taken a McLaren up the Goodwood Hill at this ridiculous flat-out pace.
So even though, for me, that Goodwood – not that, but that Goodwood time –
It was another side to Heidfeld's character, because even in Formula 3000, he was quite a muted guy, but it's like, well, he's so leery, he can do that on that course in that car as well.
You just thought there's something really special here.
And he gets to Prost, and yes, the Prost is terrible.
Yes, it's blowing up all the time, but...
He's really overshadowed by Alessi there at a time when Alessi's just come off being not wildly convincing against Pedro Diniz at Sauber.
Alessi's reputation is not at its utmost there.
You'd expect Heidfeld, if Heidfeld was as good as everyone thought at that point, I genuinely think he should be kind of putting Alessi away that season.
And it's the opposite.
And a lot is written in that year about how much Heidfeld's confidence is completely shattered by how bad the Prost is.
I think he's lucky that Sauber has the faith in what he did before to pick him up and give him a chance after that.
But no one from that moment on, from like four or five races into that pros season, no one is saying Heidfeld is as good as he looked in 98, 99.
That reputation as an absolute rising star is gone.
And he becomes a very solid Grand Prix driver.
