To the chagrin of the big AI labs in the Bay Area, AI is probably not going to turn the business world upside down completely in the next three or four years, as some of the boosters would have us believe.
Oh, they certainly are.
They're spending something like $190 billion this year.
mostly on AI data centers.
They've sprinkled AI throughout their software products.
But if you look between the eyes, I think they and some others in the industry have seen a backlash, both in terms of kind of public polling about AI and in terms of how users are reacting when AI shows up unprompted.
And so for Microsoft's part, I think you're starting to see it show up a little bit less in your face.
I, as a Microsoft Word user, we're just talking about the buttons.
The little co-pilot icon used to be a little more intrusive.
Now it feels like it's kind of tucked away in the corner.
That feels very intentional for this moment.
No, I think other folks are seeing this same trend, right?
You're seeing some of the big AI lab leaders, Sam Altman and Dara Ahmadadeh, similarly kind of walk back some of their more dire jobs predictions, particularly depending on the audience they're speaking to.
So people see the kind of, you know, ugly polls around AI and are adjusting accordingly, I think.
Oh, yeah, it's certainly the biggest one right now.
But no, there's never any shortage of it.
There's also the anti-monopoly critiques are burbling up, too.
And just the notion that there are these, depending on your count, four or five, six, seven enormous companies making influential decisions for a whole swath of the economy.
And, you know, to the point of the college kids raising the booze, perhaps without a lot of input from the grads at the ground level.
So the the first round of this has been marketed a couple of folks.
