It's vital because everybody is grasping at power. matched

So we quite often think about Anglo-Saxon England in terms of the heptarchy. matched

So those seven kind of big kingdoms. matched

But that's after a long period of distillation. matched

Each one of those kingdoms begins as like 20 kingdoms. matched

smaller places where warlords are emerging and whatever land you can take is yours. matched

And you fall out with neighbours, you fight with neighbours, you make alliances with neighbours to build and grow that kingdom. matched

So Wessex starts off as a huge collection of fragmentary kingdoms and is eventually smashed together until you get one king who is strong enough to control that whole area and begin to call it Wessex. matched

Northumbria up in the northeast is a really great example of this. matched

So for most of this period, Northumbria is two kingdoms that are quite often conquered by each other. matched

sometimes ruled by the same king, but also very, very happy to separate again and go back to being ruled by two different kings. matched

So no boundaries are settled during this whole matched

So we do see a moment when Rome evacuates. matched

They essentially take the official religion of Christianity with them. matched

The difficult thing for us is always to see what everyday ordinary people's religious worship looked like. matched
