it's something that I think a lot of people, you know, overlook when, when they're getting into sports and what I would encourage every athlete who's trying to make their way to do is put an emphasis on, on their, their academic side and just the way they carry themselves because ultimately that impacts your success on the mat or on the field or on the stage or, or,
venue you're on, it really elevates your competitiveness and your ability to be successful just as much as the training you do in your respective sport.
Ignorance is bliss.
I think there's something to the joy of being a young athlete in a lineup in any sport.
Specifically in wrestling, you see it year in and year out.
The hunger you have when you're fresh and you haven't been through as many years of competition to prove yourself is a very powerful tool.
And I think I was able to harness that pretty well.
I had great leadership in Tom and Terry Brands and Mike Zadek and...
other coaches when I was young that just constantly fed me positive reinforcement and almost gave me unrealistic expectations of myself in a good way where, you know, before you even step on the mat, you're believing you –
you've done everything and you deserve to be the national champion.
And, uh, it worked out that year.
That was my first loss.
I can still vividly remember it.
Um, you know, it felt like any other match.
It, I, the nerves weren't a lot different, but every stage you get onto higher, there's of course a little more stress, a little more, um,
nerves and uh yeah i i i i hesitate to use the word fear but you're just you know you're you're nervous um and so that one got to me but ultimately i think it helped me a couple weeks later at the ncaa championships to be ready for anything and kind of eliminate that uncertainty of wrestling the top guys that was the returning national champ so that gave me complete confidence that i had every tool in my bag to go win the national title the next
Two weeks.
I mean, he was everything.
I owe so much to my dad.
He instilled in me the passion, I would say, more than anything.
