So, you know, suppose that um I'm blackmailed into firing one of my employees, uh who I think totally doesn't deserve to get fired, but uh the threat of something horrible to me uh uh forced me to fire them, so to speak. podcast-host

Um in examples like that, you know, you kind of are pulled in two directions here. podcast-host

You want to say I was speaking freely. podcast-host

So let's imagine that there is speech here. podcast-host

You're fired. podcast-host

That's the speech. podcast-host

Uh I was speaking freely in the sense that ultimately the only arbiter of whether that happens was me. podcast-host

I decided to s utter the words you're fired. podcast-host

And then you also kinda want to say, no, I wasn't speaking freely because I was tricked somehow into doing it and I really didn't want to do it, but I saw no other way. podcast-host

Do you think that this um sort of taxonomy of different kinds of speaking freely can maybe help us uh understand what's happening in these coercion cases? podcast-host
