Yeah, absolutely.
Right.
We were, you know, in Canada being like a black Canadian, you don't really think about it until you're in the belly of the beast, quote unquote.
And so when, you know, I had a lot of family, I have a lot of family that lives south of the border.
And so when we took this trip down, I must have been, you know, 12, 13, 14 years old.
And to be face to face with the experience of being in America in this place that so informs my realities from all the sports I watched was American sports.
All the music I listened to was American music.
All the brands I wore were American brands.
And to be in this space and be black, but obviously not be black American, there was a difference.
And even my cousin would pick up on when I would say A at the end of my sentences.
And I remember this one time he was like, oh, y'all really say that.
Like y'all really say A at the end of your sentences.
And I felt so embarrassed and so different.
Just by this simple him acknowledging or pointing out this little discrepancy between my blackness and his blackness, I guess.
His was somewhat more authentic to me, right?
And I don't know.
I just thought that when I was writing this book, I wanted to share insight that was deeply black.
Black Canadian and shed authentic insight on the Black Canadian experience.
And that was, yeah, one little one, one little example of that.
