Unfortunately, it did.
That's how society works.
Did I get looked at and followed around and surveilled when me and my boys went into a corner store or stopped somewhere in a mall?
Yeah, that's the unfortunate part of the way in which stereotypes, I guess, in a sense, work.
Man, I think that's such a profound question, Jacob.
And it's something that I still wrestle with right now.
And part of me making this art and writing this book was to think through the ways in which aesthetics inform our actions and our relationships and our behaviors.
And
And I think for me, it's deeply tied into notions of recognition, initial notions of recognition, right?
Like I'm this Black dude who, you know, has a bunch of tattoos down to his wrist.
I prefer a T-shirt and a nice fitting pair of jeans over the suit.
I like to wear 19s over dress shoes.
And that all says something to the greater world, right?
And so for me to interrogate aesthetics and the ways in which a polo shirt might be read differently on my body compared to somebody else's body is...
To me, that's worth not only making note of, but trying to critique and analyze and understand why.
And I wrote about this, right?
And there's a chapter called Drip or Drown where I'm, again, that's a chapter where I'm mainly talking about aesthetics, but Jacob, you're right.
I, a lot of, a lot of the book kind of goes back and forth.
And I think it's important for us to interrogate how does this manifest itself even today, even, even today?
