When I got into the subway station, it was somewhat a different environment, I guess you could say.
And I completely reversed my blackness to appear aggressive so that whoever was in that subway at 4 a.m.
on New Year's Eve wouldn't bother me.
And I think both of those situations, when you juxtapose them,
They speak to how oftentimes Black men, Black males have to navigate spaces and enact or perform identities merely for the sake of their survival.
There's always somewhat of a on guard mentality.
experience that Black males feel where they almost have to keep their guard up, so to speak, wear a mask, so to speak, and act a character, so to speak, that either disarms folks or either puts their self at ease for their sake of their own safety and security.

What creates that character, I think, is the micro cuts that happen over time.
You're asking me this question and immediately what pops to my mind
is something that I didn't write about in the book, but another experience.
I remember being 14 years old and riding by my high school.
It was during the summer.
So there was obviously no school for, no traditional school, but there was summer school going on and something had happened where police were called.
And as I was riding my bike, I got pulled over by the police and the police asked me for ID.
I was 14 years old, right?
I didn't have ID.
