They were- What 14 year old carries IDs?

On a bicycle, getting stopped by police in a suburban neighborhood in Scarborough, right?

And these acts where you're taught that, oh, and I'm just pointing to the singularity of this specific aspect and how it starts to bleed into this notion of abstraction where we look at, okay, yeah, not all police are bad, but in my experiences, they're always negative experiences and I have to protect myself from that.

From this institution in this instance.

So fast forward to the time I'm 20 something years old and walking past a police station.

I have all these embedded experiences, not only from my own life, but probably from the movies that I've watched, probably from the music that I've listened to.

And the things that I've seen in society that have taught me implicitly to think of this group identity or this institution in a certain way, merely for the sake of my survival.

And that's, I think, you know, the philosophical question you asked.

I think the best way I could answer that is it's just, you know, the thousand cuts that continue to happen and become perpetuated over time that create something like that.

It's reactive, right?

We are...

you know, I would like to believe that most of us or we all are kind of, we come into our experiences with a blank slate and we are oftentimes informed.

We're informed by the things around us, right?

So when you experience these things, it's more reactive, right?

You are essentially trying to

to make it through to the end of the day, to the end of the week.

Even in that chapter that we're talking about, I think I end talking about how I'd make it back to my hotel and I didn't want to look in the mirror because I would have to face some harsh truth.

I was trying to speak to something metaphorically there about the performance of our identity and what we're faced with the fact that we're performing.

It creates a schism within us.
