I mean, he had very right wing beliefs, but his genius was
that he was genial, that he came across as kind of your lovable uncle.
He really became prominent politically for the first time in 1964 when he was campaigning on behalf of Barry Goldwater, who at that time was seen as this right-wing kook.
And it was very interesting for me to see there was a journalist who watched both Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan speaking on the same platform, and he noted that
And Barry Goldwater came across as an angry man, as somebody who was kind of scary and frightening, whereas Ronald Reagan was Mr. Genial.
This journalist compared Reagan's personality to taking a warm, soothing bath.
He made everybody feel good.
He had the exact same message as Barry Goldwater, but he delivered with a smile and a wink of
and just made it seem very unthreatening and very acceptable in a way that Barry Goldwater did not.
Well, the first thing that happened, of course, was that he ran for governor of California against Pat Brown, who was a very popular two-term governor.
And nobody expected that this, you know, quote-unquote washed-up actor could possibly beat Pat Brown, the two-term governor of California.
And yet he did beat Pat Brown by a million votes, showing that he was one heck of a politician.
But then the first thing that happened right after he won in November of 1966 was within a month,
He sat down in the Pacific Palisades House with his advisors and started talking about how he could seek the presidency in 1968, which is a very aggressive schedule.
Shows just how ambitious he was, but he never wanted to let on that he was that ambitious.
And then, of course, the 68 campaign fizzled out.
It just was not his year.
