Yeah, I mean, that was, people forget, that was an incredibly gutsy move to challenge a sitting president of your own party in the primaries.

And he did that because Reagan had no respect for Ford.

He thought Ford was an accidental president, which in many respects he was.

Reagan really thought he himself, Ronald Reagan, was the natural successor to Richard Nixon.

And so he did not want Ford standing between him and the Oval Office.

And so he challenged him in 1976.

and lost some of the early contests.

And if he'd had to pull out of the primaries early, that probably would have been the end of Ronald Reagan's career.

But he pulled off this unexpected upset in North Carolina with the help of the Jussie Helms political machine.

And then it was really a fight all the way to the convention.

He didn't win.

Reagan didn't win, but he came closer than any other challenger to taking the nomination away from a sitting president.

And so he emerged actually stronger than when he had gone into it.

And so even though he lost very narrowly to Ford, he delivered a tremendous speech at the convention.

And after Ford lost to Jimmy Carter in the general election, Ronald Reagan at that point was seen as

as kind of next man in line for the Republican nomination.
