A lot of people thought he was cold, but other than that, he was kind of the next man in line.
100%, yeah, because if Carter had been a very successful president, if the economy had been in great shape, if there hadn't been an Iran hostage crisis, it's hard to imagine Reagan mounting a political comeback.
But because Carter's presidency was a hot mess, basically, with stagflation, double-digit inflation, high interest rates, the Iran hostage crisis, everything that went wrong
that could go wrong, went wrong.
And so that created an opening for the Republicans.
And there were a lot of Republicans who were eager to run.
Uh, but Reagan was the guy having run before, uh, who was the front runner from, from the get go.
He was.
Yeah, that was also that was another one of his campaign slogans.
But, you know, it had it had a different meaning in those days, because if you'd ask Ronald Reagan, what makes America great?
His response would probably be immigrants, because he often talked about how we were a country of immigrants.
And it was really people from all over the world come here.
That's that was the true greatness of America.
So same slogan, but different meaning.
Reagan, again, was a master communicator, very genial guy.
He had everything going in his favor except for one thing, which was people still had some doubts.
Was this former actor up to the job of being president or was he some kind of scary right wing kook?
And I think Reagan really put a lot of those doubts to bed.
in his one debate with Jimmy Carter, where he kind of wiped the floor with Carter.
