Now, of course, the reality of that line is very different from the way people perceived it because it was kind of a killer line.
that made Carter seem like this mean, grumpy guy and Reagan as this genial, witty fellow.
Of course, if you actually look at what they were talking about, Carter was right because he was accusing Reagan of having opposed
the creation of Medicare.
And Reagan said, there you go again, and then proceeded to argue about why he had been in favor of medical insurance all along, whereas the reality is, as I discovered, Reagan had been in favor of legislation that would have covered like 1% of seniors, whereas, of course, Medicare covers all seniors.
So Carter was right.
He was opposed to Medicare.
But
fact-checking didn't matter.
What mattered was he was the master of these genial one-line comebacks, and he was brilliant in debate.
And among other things that upended one of the assumptions of his critics was that he was too stupid to be president, that he was an airhead.
In fact, he showed he was very quick on his feet.
He was very good at repartee, and that showed a lot of things, including a sense of humor, but also that he had this mental agility to be president.
Yeah, you're talking about David Stockman, who was this wunderkind budget director who had been a congressman for a couple of terms and that Reagan basically turned over all his economic policy to this guy.
But, you know, Stockman had sort of an impossible job because if you look at what Reagan was promising during the campaign, he said he was going to raise defense spending substantially.
And he launched the largest peacetime defense buildup in American history.
He said he was going to cut taxes substantially.
And he did.
