to wring the inflation out of the economy and then reagan and and a bipartisan congress passed tax cuts in 1981 and so the result of all that was to get the economy growing again and creating very strong economic growth just in time for his reelection campaign in 1984 again at the cost of of of these high budget deficits which you know uh david stockman admitted he had no idea of how to solve that problem but at the end of the day
It wasn't that much of an economic problem.
It was more of a political problem.
Yeah, all of that is absolutely right.
I mean, he was, I call my chapter on the assassination attempt his finest hour because it really was because, you know, he came much closer to death than people realized after he was shot by John Hinckley.
He was bleeding out at the hospital and yet he never lost his sense of humor.
And, you know, even as he's going to the operating table, he's joking with the doctor saying, I hope you're all Republicans and telling his wife, honey, I forgot to duck.
And so when those comments were relayed to the public,
And there was just this wave of affection and support for Ronald Reagan.
And so he came back out of the hospital stronger than ever, not only physically, but politically.
And that's what enabled him to pass these tax cuts, which, as you point out, had strong bipartisan support.
I mean, remember, in those days, the House was in power.
was in Democratic hands.
So he needed Democratic support to pass those bills.
And he had it because, as you say, there was a bipartisan consensus that tax rates were too high.
Now, in hindsight, I think it was kind of a mixed blessing because on the one hand, it did help to turbocharge the economy.
It did lead to stronger economic growth.
But the downside of it is just what you said.
