It also led to greater income inequality because so many of the benefits accrued to the top 1% of earners.
And so if you look at charts of income inequality in America, they tend to go like this in the early 1980s.
They start to diverge very radically.
So you have the top earners making more than ever, but then you have the middle class stagnating and the working class going backwards.
And that was certainly not intended to be the consequence of Reaganomics, but I think
Reaganomics was one of the factors that led to that.
I mean, there were other factors, including the information age, computers, free trade.
There were a lot of stuff going on, but there's no question that the Reagan era tax policy contributed to some of that income inequality.
Yeah, I think you can make the case for both arguments, truly.
And he was just not worried about income inequality.
This was one of his blind spots.
His entire focus was on economic growth.
He didn't really think about who was getting the benefits.
He just wanted to get the economy growing.
And you can see the logic for that.
But I think this was a big blind spot.
And I think we are...
We are paying a price for it.
Part of the price is the Republican Party has been dramatically transformed in a more populist direction since Ronald Reagan's day, in part because of these trends that Reagan himself inadvertently set into motion.
That's complicated because, as you say, he was actually brought up by his parents not to be bigoted, and he really wasn't.
