And I think he had no errors about him.
And it's fascinating.
One of the most fascinating aspects of my research
was visiting his ranch near Santa Barbara.
And I would encourage anybody who has the opportunity to go out there because I think it's really a window into who Ronald Reagan was.
And it's this beautiful land with a view of the Pacific, lots of riding trails.
But if you go to the actual house, it's unbelievably modest.
It's a place where, you know, the decor looks like it came from a flea market.
It's never going to be featured in Architectural Digest.
And this was a place visited by very few people.
And one of the
really touching aspects of learning about Reagan was, you know, learning, talking to this fellow named Dennis LeBlanc, who used to be a California state police officer, used to protect Reagan, then went to work for him on his ranch and talking about what Reagan was like there in the 1980s.
And, you know, Reagan with Dennis and another former state police officer named Barney Barnett, they would go out there and do ranch work all day, and then they would come home
you know, dead tired and sit down to dinner with Nancy with a very stingy meal prepared by the housekeeper because Nancy Reagan was always watching her weight and made sure everybody else was too.
And so, you know, they would get up from the table almost as hungry as when they sat down and then they would go to this very modest living room and plop down on the sofa like so many other Americans, turn on the TV and watch Murder, She Wrote or one of these other shows from the 1980s.
And then at some point, they would all kind of fall asleep in front of the tube.
And
Nancy would nudge, you know, Dennis on the foot and say, okay, guys, time to go to bed.
And so Dennis and Barney would kind of shuffle off to their trailer and the housekeeper might give them a couple of chocolate chip cookies as a going away present.
And then the president and the first lady would go to their extremely modest bedroom and fall asleep.
