And there were a lot of things that went into that.
But part of it was Ronald Reagan's sunny personality, his optimistic outlook, and his ability to communicate his confidence in America to the American people.
I think that was hugely important.
That was a massive achievement.
Yeah, no, I think there were a lot of secrets to his success.
A big one was that he was very pragmatic.
He was willing to compromise.
Another part of it was that he had this tremendous communications ability known as the great communicator.
And it wasn't just that he was reading speeches off of teleprompters.
for decades, he was writing his own speeches.
He was making his own remarks.
So he really, and this was a skill really honed as a radio broadcaster in the 1930s, he knew how to communicate with people and to get across to them.
But another part of his appeal was simply, as you said, that he had a very likable personality, even though in real life, he was kind of a remote person with very few real friends.
He projected likability.
He was very soft edged.
And he played into that because he didn't go out and attack people
uh his political opponents uh you know he always uh he never engaged in that homonym attacks he he was always a consummate gentleman and so that made it much easier for him to engineer bipartisan agreement and also to win votes from democrats uh what you needed to do in those days because democrats were still the majority party and so you know he was at the end of the day
Ronald Reagan, even if he disagreed with his policies or his politics, he was just a very hard guy to dislike.
Personally, he was just so amiable, genial, so low-key.
He was so unassuming and modest.
