But his other great achievement in his first term, which we're now talking about, was to kind of give the country its mojo back after this very difficult, tumultuous decade of the 1970s, which I'm just barely old enough to remember.
This was a time when you had stagflation, Watergate, defeat in Vietnam, the Iranian hostage crisis.
Everything that could go wrong was going wrong in the country.

shining city on a hill as this wonderful place.
He never lost that faith.
He had kind of the same gift as FDR, who imbued Americans with confidence during the Great Depression.
Reagan imbued Americans with confidence after the 70s and during the terrible recession from 81 to 83.
He made people believe it was all going to work out okay.
And he revived pride in the military.
He revived pride in the United States.
And I think that was a tremendous achievement so that he was able to run for reelection in 1984.
with these famous commercials proclaiming that it's morning again in America.
And people believed that.
That resonated.
It really felt like we had turned a corner from all the defeats and despair of the 1970s.
All of a sudden, things were looking up.
