I mean, he started off as the Errol Flynn of the bees.
But again, by 1941, he was getting equal billing with Errol Flynn.
So that counts for something in Hollywood.
What happened with the war was, I mean, he did not go off to fight, but he did go off to Culver City, which was a few miles from his home, to serve in an Air Force propaganda unit that was making training movies and propaganda movies for the Air Force.
Now, he often talked as if he was off to battle or something like that.
In fact, he never went anywhere.
So there was no danger involved in terms of personal danger, but it was not good for his career because
during the war for a period of several years, the only pictures he was making were these Air Force propaganda pictures so that he was not in the commercial movie industry.
And then meanwhile, other folks like John Wayne, who, by the way, was basically a draft dodger, he was making a lot of movies and becoming a big star during World War II while Reagan was sidelined.
And so when the war finally ended in 1945,
You know, Reagan took off his uniform.
He was a captain by that point, and he had a high-priced contract with Warner Brothers.
But what he found was he wasn't getting cast on a lot of pictures because movie audiences had changed, tastes had changed.
The whole industry was kind of in decline, in part because of the rise of TV, in part because –
of a justice department antitrust suit that broke up the studios where they don't movie theaters and all your own theaters.
But anyway, the studios were basically laying off stars and, and Reagan's career was kind of a victim of that post kind of the post war Hollywood economics.
In the late 40s, right at the height of that Red Scare, right at the start of the Cold War, that was when Reagan was basically seeing his movie career dry up and he was finding a new life in politics.
And he was also changing his political ideology because in the 1930s, he had been this ardent New Deal liberal who worshipped FDR.
But then in the late 40s, he started becoming – he was still pretty liberal economically and still a Democrat.
But he started to become this very hardline anti-communist in part because of his contacts with the FBI.
