And also, like it did, it took years to get the policing, the staffing of that command to a level which was agreeable with government.
So I look back on that, which was difficult years, but at the same time, creating a new police command, I had the opportunity of working with some great people there, good people who are still best friends as of today.
So that was a great experience and part of my history.
And then Mick Fuller became the police commissioner and Mick called me in to his office and said, mate, I want to move you.

And, of course, being a Newcastle boy born and bred, I went, you don't have to ask me twice.
I was very, very proud to finish my career in Northern Region as the assistant commissioner.
The men and women who work in this region,
You know, they work under the most trying of circumstances.
Most of the crime rates are the highest in the state.
When you look at, you know, what do our officers do in our local communities, they're going from domestic to domestic to domestic.
They're dealing with mental health, mental health, mental health.
They're dealing with decease.
You know, what... And look, at times I've got frustrated at some officers because...
You know, it's all about providing to the community a good and fair level of service.
And the amount of people that will complain to me going, Max, you know, a member of my family was assaulted or there's some incident and you know what, I haven't heard from the local officer.
Or when I have rang, oh, he's off or she's off.
what I would always encourage young men and women to do their utmost to pick up the phone and just update a victim of crime.
Just let them know what's happening.
