I would come home, have a shower to get rid of the school, and after dinner lock myself in the kitchen. And while the family was watching TV, I was pouring out these anecdotes really, these people that to me were not even connected. It was like one thing after the other, without a plan, without an idea of what I was doing or where I was going.

The story is set in an unspecified country, but the descriptions, events and characters evoke Chile's 20th century history. The feeling was of joy, of freedom, of excitement. This creative force that took over me completely. My mother said at some point, I think this is a novel, and why don't we just take a chance? Let's send it to some publishers.

She sent the book. We never got an answer. I never got a rejection letter, just silence. Rupert Westmacott, a New Zealander born in Britain, is approaching the coast of Turkey. He watches as the first wave of Australian and New Zealand troops, known as the Anzacs, land on the peninsula of Gallipoli.

They were taken ashore in all sorts of luggers and fishing boats and god knows what. It was rather like being in a cinema. And I could see and hear the rifle shots. And I could see our men advancing up the hills and being mown down. The Anzaks took the beach at what was to become known as Anzak Cove. But the Turks prevented them from advancing up the surrounding hills.

In later life, Westmacott, or Westy as he was nicknamed, told the BBC about the moment he was told to land.
