Well here's one worry.
This comes out a little bit in some work by Christine Korsgaard and Susan Wolfe.
criticizing the stage theory of planning, particularly criticizing Derek Parfitt, who made this way of talking really popular.
If you're a temporal stage right now that's trying to think about your reasons, stages only really have like momentary pleasures.
Like you think you know, you're gonna think of yourself as like a little ball of like pleasure.
St a temporal stage can't be a father or like a marathon runner or have any of these identity things that require existing for more than an instant.
At least it doesn't seem like it can.
You can come up with maybe complicated metaphysical theories.

But it'd be pretty hard because you'd say, like, well, he didn't exist
at any other moment besides this one.
So he didn't exist long enough to like have kids.
Wolf and Korsgaard and this is a bit of a paraphrase, but they say like look

Well, because I'm a dad.
Why are you getting up and running this morning?
Well, 'cause I'm a marathoner.
Marathoners have to run every morning.
Those kinds of arguments on the stage view don't seem to make any sense because you, the thing that's like making the trade-off right now, aren't a dad or a marathoner.
