We have to be able to plan for our futures even if we know we're gonna change significantly.
Why is that?
Well well some mundane reasons.
One, like people rationally decide to become parents all the time.
It's a bad like data point for her theory if she says that a kind of decision that lots of people everywhere are undertaking every day turns out to be irrational.
We're owed a big theory of error if that's the case.
But also, I mean, even just more mundane scenarios.
I put some money in my retirement account this month.
I am very confident I'm going to be an extremely different woman when I'm sixty five.
I cannot even imagine what it will be like to be a woman like that.
But I can guess that money's gonna be a good thing for her.
She's gonna be glad that I have it and and that she made I made the decision.
Got some evidence for that based on like polling retirees about how much they like money and what they like to spend money on.
And that's good enough for me to to engage in my planning right now.
I also think like some philosophers have proposed cases where radical changes in your character are meant to be difficult for rational planning.
So one famous one comes from Derek Parfitt is the Russian nobleman problem.
So Parfit says, like, imagine
You've got this young Russian socialist who really cares about distributing wealth to the poor in his country and like freeing the serfs from their labor.
He knows in a few years he's going to inherit a vast fortune from his father.
And he also knows that as soon as he inherits the fortune, he's going to turn into like a greedy capitalist oligarch scumbag.
