That is a real issue.
I spoke with a woman in Florida whose daughter has a surgery scheduled for mid-June.
In order for that surgery to happen, her mother, Heather, has to come up with about $2,000 for the surgery center.
She has insurance.
and she has a deductible.
A chunk of her daughter's surgery falls under her deductible.
She now is in the position of trying to find the money.
She has a job with benefits.
She also works delivering food on weekends, and she picks up extra work as a caterer.
She's not clear that she will be able to get the money together, and so she's actually turned...
to crowdfunding.
She's turned to GoFundMe to try to raise the money.
She has detailed the costs that she's been given for the procedure and when she needs the money by, and she's talked a little bit about what her daughter needs to have happen.
Heather has gone, like many others have, to GoFundMe to try to pay for medical bills.
Hospitals, surgery centers typically do have some kind of
financing option and it's always worth asking about.
Hospitals may also have the financial assistance or charity care programs which patients can apply for.
In those cases, they may write off the bill entirely depending on your income, the size of your bill.
Asking about hospitals' financial aid programs is really the first step, and it's incredibly important because there are many people who find themselves with unaffordable medical bills who didn't know that charity care programs exist.
Applying for them can be a challenge.
