If you run into obstacles, it is absolutely worth asking the hospital for help or turning to an organization like Dollar Four, which actually helps people apply for financial aid programs.
They may not always be super transparent.
They may simply say, how would you like to pay today?
It is absolutely reasonable to ask, do I need to pay today?
Can I pay after the surgery?
Do you have a payment plan?
Am I eligible for charity care?
It may be that hospitals, as they are trying to collect money, start with the question, how do you want to pay?
That doesn't mean that you have to pay.
It's worth asking, what are my options?
Hospitals can't turn you away if you show up in the emergency department.
And hospitals typically say they are not going to turn you away if you are in urgent need of medical care.
Where hospitals may say we are not going to schedule this procedure until you pay in advance typically falls into that bucket of scheduled procedures, electives, things that can wait.
And different hospitals have different policies on this.
So it's always best to ask.
