Because I've been deep in the research of a new play that I'm writing at the moment, and there are two texts.
The first is The Pioneering Life of Mary Wortley Montague, Scientist and Feminist by Jo Willett.
And this is a book about this incredible woman from the 18th century, Mary Wortley Montague, who is pretty much charged with having brought inoculation of smallpox from Turkey and from Eastern Europe and Europe and Asia.
The whole world was using this type of inoculation against smallpox except for England and Europe.
This Mary Wortley Montague brought it over to England and she is such a fascinating character.
She was a feminist before her time.
She was actually funny.
You know how 18th century letters and the like can be a bit stiff?
Hers never are.
And this is a really colourful, descriptive biography that
the other book i'd love to recommend is called the angel of death the story of smallpox you can see i've been into some some fun things and it's by a doctor and academic called gareth williams and again it tells the story of smallpox as though it is a person this is kind of like a biography of smallpox and it's deliciously written in a way that tells the story and even though he this doctor is a doctor and an academic
It's by no means an academic text.
It reads like a thriller.
And so I would recommend those two.
