I mean, I'm a very metaphysical reporter in that way.

No, that's that's that's extremely interesting.

So then after you finish this piece for your college project, what happened then?

Yeah.

So that becomes the premise of,

of the first piece that you ever wrote for the magazine called The Invisible Army, right?

And in that piece, you tell the story mostly of two hairdressers, manicurists from Fiji who have been lied to, who have been recruited into doing the service work for the army.

But they're told, of course, that they're going to go to Dubai and work at like a fancy hotel.

Those women are incredible characters and your piece opens with these two kind of quick sketches of them.

How did you find those particular subjects?

How do you decide who the main characters, let's say, are going to be of a piece that you're reporting out that could potentially include 60,000 main characters?

Yeah, you got a manicure.

decide on that so how do you get people to trust you how do you get them to tell you their stories other than visiting them or encountering them multiple times and trying to speak to them at a moment where they're not under obvious surveillance what is the process of getting a subject to disclose things to you like yeah

I think that's often meaningful trust building time.

No, that's interesting because so many of the other people we've spoken with, the interview is a distinct moment and it requires a certain kind of setup.

And that setup is really different from the movement of day-to-day life.

Totally.

So it's interesting to hear you speak about it as something that can be much more embedded in the in the day to day and just happening alongside it.
